VLC media player v. 2.1.5 freezes and won't close

I have vlc player version 2.1.5 and my os is win8. The player will play videos sometimes, but at other times, will freeze up with the image of the start of the video still displaying. I can click the close button, but it just minimizes the window and puts the vlc icon on the windows taskbar. If I click it ,it opens the player, still showing the video image. I can attempt to close it numerous times before the player finally closes. Sometimes the program won't open at all. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
