Display duration of Subtitles

This is a bit of a long shot but I hope someone may help
When replaying recorded TV programs on VLC player I wonder is there any way I can setup the length of time that a line of subtitled dialogue is displayed on screen ?
I find that often the first line of dialogue will continue to display on screen until another line is spoken or if no dialogue is spoken for several minutes the last dialogue is continually displayed
Is there a way to make all dialogue only display for as long as it would take to read the dialogue ?
