VLC Player 2.1.2 crashes when trying to load files

Postby armorysons » 15 Dec 2013 03:10

I've found that after updating to VLC 2.1.2, I'm having issues loading video files. Sometimes (not all the time), when attempting to load a video file, I'll instantly get a message saying, "Oooops: VLC media player just crashed. Would you like to send a bug report to the developers team?" Sometimes, if I click "No," the video will load just fine, sometimes the program will load and the video won't, and sometimes, VLC just crashes again after clicking No.I'm not sure what the cause of this is. I've uninstalled/reinstalled, all the typical troubleshooting stuff. It's just weird because it seems like VLC is picking and choosing which videos it wants to load.

Any support would be appreciated.

Have the same problem. I simply deinstalled 2.1.2, downloaded 2.1.1 again, installed it and am happy ever after. Plus, I disabled any form of automatic update to be save: manual only.
EDIT: I also keep checking any update or comment on the problem.

I'll probably just do this. The previous version worked perfectly for me, and now this is happening. :/

Do you have a video that crashes?

Can you try to use VLC 2.1.2 with libavcodec_plugin.dll from 2.1.1 ?

I wasn't able to find this file after installing 2.1.1, but I decided I'll just go back to 2.1.1 since it actually works. Thank you both for the suggestions!

If you ever try again: C:\Program Files\VideoLan\VCL\plugins\codec\libavcodec_plugin.dll

What files are crashing? Can you share some, or is it random?

For me it is almost everything EXCEPT for .avi and .iso files.
Windows XP SP3
AMD Athlon XP 2800+
2GB RAM
My other computer:
Windows 7 Ult
AMD Hexacore
12GB RAM
does not seem to have this problem.
Though it does seem to have the volume problem.

Oh, question for me. Sorry, didn't expect to actually come back to this board: The only video files I tried were MP4s. All MP4s crashed my 2.1.2, MP3s worked just fine. Those are the only files I tried with 2.1.2.
EDIT: I only installed 2.1.2 one computer. I haven't used VLC on 7 or Vista yet, only on the older XP SP2 or SP3, don't remember which update right now. Must be the same specifications as jamesraykenney's.

Can you try some ogg/vorbis/theora files?

And what is the volume problem you have?

Are you able to test a dll for me?

Sorry to hijack this thread but my problem is very very similar. I'm sure this will not be fixed soon but maybe my complaint helps to make you recognize it as a bug.
Since after version 1.1.7 with every new version vlc will crash totally random when a new file is loaded to play. Crash as in just disappearing with leaving the symbol in the taskbar and giving the crash message when it's restarted.
Totally random as in file1 plays, file2 makes it crash, now it will play files1 and 2 and crash at the start of 3, next time it will be file1, file1 again, then 7, etc.

It happens especially often with wmv files, after that it's 3gp and flv, a bit less often avi and mpg. Sometimes it crashes like every 3rd file, while other times it's only after 30 files. This also has to do with the file extension/codec and the filesize. It crashes less when playing e.g. 50 avi files with a length of an hour each, while it crashes more often when playing 50 short random files and it has to switch from avi to mpg or so. The more files are in the queue the sooner it will crash, too. The files are not corrupt, or at least not for other players and vlc can still play them, it just randomly decides to not to. It's very annoying if I want to play some short files (music videos, amv, porn - especially annoying, youtube-videos, etc.) and have to constantly restart vlc and will have like 30 shadow symbols in the taskbar after an hour.

(using XP SP3 x32)

Mine? Intel Core 2 Duo, T9300 @ 2.50 GHz (and RAM: 3.00 GB, Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT)

Correction: The error message doesn't show everytime after restarting vlc. Sometimes it shows, most times not.

Hi

I also updated from VLC 2.1.1 (which worked perfectly for me) to 2.1.2

Now I often have distortions during playback
and some DVDs are not playing at all.

I hope this will be fixed soon.

Thanks.

I get this random crash with 2.1.1, (have not tried 2.1.2), 2.1.3, 2.1.4
I tried 2.0.2 and kind of the same thing happens. Sometimes VLC just don't start when I dubbleclick a file. With this version though I don't get any error message that VLC has crashed.

I started getting this problem about a week ago with 2.1.5. It says it has crashed with pretty much every file I have, but loads them afterwards in most cases. My mp4 of The Godfather which I really wanted to watch isn't behaving and won't start up at all, which is infuriating. Anything i can do, or refrain form obtaining mp4 files?
