Does VLC automatically downmix 5.1 to stereo?

In the absence of a 5.1 audio card, does surround get downmixed to stereo by default, or is there some setting we need to change to make this happen?

VLC will downmix automatically if the OS is configured correctly.

Hello - does VLC also automatically downmix 5.1 to 4-channel output if Mac's Audio Midi Setup app is set up for quad playback with the connected audio interface?
