re setup associations

My pc crashed several times and now when I download VLC and try to change the settings in setup associations I get this message(the application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way)what's with that also program error 0x40000015 and occurred at location 0x6fc24ea. can someone help I have tried deleting everything and downloading from scratch but no change in program
