VLC 2.1.3 now missing icon in toolbar

I have used VLC for a few years with no great difficulties, but I now have a problem I cannot correct. Yesterday I allowed VLC to update to 2.1.3 but now find I have no recording icon in my toolbar. At one time the icon was in the top left of the high toolbar, then, maybe a year ago, it moved to the top right. But now there is nothing, except the downward pointing arrow that, when clicked, shows the completed and running downloads. So if I am watching a video I want to record, there is no 'little 3 circles' moving icon to click.
Would someone please explain how I can get this recording icon back?

ps I am running Firefox 30.0 on Windows 7 (64bit). That's been the case for three or four weeks, before that, other versions of Firefox but still with Win7(64).
