VLC will not play MPEG-4's correctly

Hello all.

Can someone tell me if there is anything I can do to correct this problem:

Mpeg-4 video files do not play well. The sound gets ahead of the image, the image freezes up, and the image is of poor quality...

I am using XP on my IBM Thinkpad laptop.

Any other information you might need I'd be glad to provide...

The only player that worked more or less correctly was Power DVD, for some reason.

I'll be happy to hear any suggestions.
