Trouble viewing streaming tv

I use vlc player to view Youtube videos because it plays them much smoother with out any choppiness. But when I try view a streaming tv show from... let's say, HistoryChannel.com for instance, it doesn't work. Also I can't get Channels.com to work even though there is a button for it right on my VLC player. Can anyone please help me with these issues? Thank you for your time.
