VLC-0.7.1-test1 - first feedback

Postby irkuck » 14 Feb 2004 11:30

My first quick feedback for vlc-0.7.1-test1:

- After clicking vlc shortcut the
menu window which opens is narrower than in previous versions. Since I am using bigger font, the selection icons are only half visible, the rest is cut from the bottom by the window border

- Extended GUI color setting does not seem to work (yet?)

- Storing settings in module video output -> vout_directx works now but it does not seem to
be very helpful. That is first video window opened is always hardwware YUV->RGB conversion, the next ones can be software.
The brigthness differences between
the first window and next windows
remain as usual

- One small user interface quality of life improvement problem: This happens when watching TV in a window and the window is moved to another position. Now when channel is changed the window closes and opens again in default position
moving e.g. half of the screen. Would not it be more logical that the window remains in the place and size where it was put by the user? Or can this be actually set somewhere?

Hmmm, that is weird, I didn't notice that. Unless you are not including 0.7.0 in the previous versions because I think the size indeed changed in 0.7.0.

Unfortunately there isn't much we can do about that. It is an hardware issue not a VLC issue.
Graphics cards use different brightness levels for their different ways of rendering a video picture (overlay, YUV picture, RBG picture).
We could (and may) implement brightness settings for each of these methods but it's a pain in the ass because we support the 3 different methods mentionned above.

Ideally, your graphics card should implement a way to change the default brightness settings for at least the overlay and the RGB surfaces.

Yeah, that is something we would definitely like to see supported in future versions... just don't know when ;)

Thanks for the reports.

Menu window

Postby irkuck » 15 Feb 2004 16:42

OK, thank you for the answer.

Now I know better what is the
problem with menu window.

It is now shorter than in v. 7.0.

This makes that I get menu selections displayed in two rows,
Navigation and Help are in the
second row. After expanding the
window everything is fine. Remember I am using bigger font
than standard so it would be good
to make that menu selections are always in one line and the window
expands.

Let ma add something which was discussed earlier:

Recording function for vlc would be really
cool:D

Well that's already possible. You just don't know how to use it :)

You mean a recording button. That's on the "Very longterm" TODO list of VLC.
Don't use PMs for support questions.

There is ONE great improvement in 07.1 compared to 07: no more crashes when navigating in the menus.
I can now launch the film with serenity... Well, some "preview" sequences still won't be displayed (but the sound track is ok) , and there are still some bugs in the menus (i.e.
colour issues), but these are minor problems.
Hope we'll see a brand new interface and an upgraded right-click menu soon
