Headphone surround effect

Postby bernd_b » 18 Dec 2013 14:06

The latest thing I found about this is here: https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=81247 concluding Dolby Headphone is only for Dolby Surround.
Dolby Headphoe is a simulation of a multichannel setup by only using your headphone (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Headphone). I have a heapdhone amp which uses Dolby Headphone and it decodes 5.1 DD as well as DTS in addition to the older and analogue Dolby Surround I/II standard.

But anyway - this is free software certainly not using the Dolby stuff. And it would be nice to have a room simulation headphone feature supplied by the software - so testing vlc-2.1.2 gave me this so far:
I used this file: http://download.dolby.com/Content_Downl ... -large.mp4 from here: http://www.dolby.com/us/en/consumer/tec ... nload.html

- Turning on "Headphone surround effect" (simple setings menu under audio):
This might produce a little room impression, although I seem to have to use insane values in "Characteristic values": 50 (meaning 50m of distance from the front speakers?) in the complete settings menu under "audio-filter-Headphone effect. Maybe I have to try with a even better headphone again.
If I turn on "Compensate delay" here, every effect seem to vanish.

- Enabling "Spatializer" under extended settings:
This gives me nice room effects adding echos to the sound. Unfortunately I loose all stereo effect with my setup. Bug, feature or fault on my side?

By the way:Is it true that I always have to restart vlc to make the new settings work?
