streaming video lagging

Hello, I have been playing a real-time streaming video in m3u format using the vlc media player. The player sometimes keeps repeating the last 10 secs of the video or so before going on and would eventually stop completely. I am guessing that this might be because of server lag, and the repeating behavior eventually makes the player and the server completely out of sync and the player just stops. Any fixes for that?
