RE: Clip duration extends beyond 'Time Toolbar'

Postby Fiona Archivist » 18 Oct 2013 13:30

Hi there,

Can any of you clever people explain why the film clips I am watching (in 'MOV File' format) extend beyond the duration stated in the time toolbar (so a clip with the end time of 5 minutes can for example, play on for 7)? This is something I have never come accross before and curiously, when watching the clips in QuickTime, the stated time toolbar duration is indeed 'accurate'. I'd like to know what's happening as I'm an archivist and need exact timings for our catalogue and is there a way to display this 'other' mysterious time duration, rather than having to watch a clip until it ends?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Fiona

I would say that the MOV file is incorrect/invalid in some way (for example, the meta info might say the file ends at 5 min, but there is extra data/video in the file extending on to 7 min): I know QuickTime does it "correctly", but they created the format, so their player will likely always play it correctly. QuickTime might choose to ignore the file's meta info & scan for "how long" it really is. VLC is probably "doing the right thing" & trusting the file's meta info, which is lying.

I can only suggest you upload the file & the devs can take a look at it & determine if the file is corrupt/invalid or if VLC is really reading it wrong.

Sigh, the above can't be a link: "You cannot use certain BBCodes: [url]."...so, I can't even link back to a post on this forum?
How about this: can long-term/trusted users be allowed links in sigs?
