DVD: Is BurnAware Free a problem for VLC?

Postby movies » 08 Oct 2013 00:38

I have a couple of DVDs that I burned with BurnAware Free after backing up my commercial DVDs. I'm using BurnAware Free v3.4, VLC Media Player 2.0.8, Windows 7 (64-bit).

When I play the DVD with VLC player, I get the main menu, but when I choose "Play Movie" from the menu it goes back to the VLC playlist screen (I think it might play the rating screen first). OTOH when I play the DVD with Windows Media Player, when I choose "Play Movie" the movie actually plays (so I know the disk burned okay).

As another test, I took one of these movies and burned it with Roxio Video Copy & Convert (from the Roxio Creator 2012 Suite). It played okay in VLC Media Player and in Windows Media Player.

It seems VLC is having trouble with disks burned with BurnAware, but is okay with Roxio; and WMP is okay with both.

Is there some incompatibility between VLC and BA? I suppose it's possible there's something wrong with the file structure and VLC is more strict while WMP is more forgiving.

Thanks!
