DVDs seem to take an extremely long time to play

It seems that when I try to open a DVD in VLC it takes about 5 minutes before it finally plays. Every once in a while a specific disc will play instantly, but they are few and far between. Some discs I've left in for around 30 minutes and they never managed to play. Also, occasionally a disc will play fine one day, then abruptly end the next. Although discs that play instantly seem to consistently play instantly, this seems to be a general issue with VLC playing DVDs. MPC HC plays them all fine, but gives saved screenshots a weird aspect ratio, which is one of the reasons I prefer VLC.

Right now I'm running a nightly from September 14 on a Windows 7 box, but I've experienced this issue on every stable version and nightly that I've tried for several months. The only weird thing is my laptop does not experience this issue.
