VLC crashes/skips when playing MKV files.

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

VLC crashes/skips when playing MKV files.

Postby philpem » 28 Jun 2005 09:52

OS: Windows 2000 SP4 with all current HotFixes
Hardware: AMD Athlon64 3200+, ASUS A8V Deluxe, 512MB RAM, Club3D 128MB GeForce 6600GT, 1x80GB+1x20GB HDDs, Liteon 851S DVD ReWriter
Drivers: Latest VIA Hyperion 4in1, Realtek RLC850 CODEC driver, nVidia Forceware 71.89.
VLC Version: 0.8.2
Situation: Attempted to play an MKV file that was being seeded in Azureus (this worked OK in 0.8.1). VLC crashed.
Reproducible: YES. VLC crashes every time the file is opened.
Video Format: Matroska MKV. DX50 codec, Dual Audio (Vorbis 128k), Subtitled.
Workaround: Make a copy of the file, then open the copy. Alternatively, shut down Azureus before playing files.
Notes: VLC 0.8.1 could load files while they were 100% complete but other files in the torrent were still being downloaded. 0.8.2 loses this functionality.

And now, another possible bug:
Situation: VLC skips badly when playing DX50 MKVs
Reproducible: YES.
Steps taken: Killed all background tasks, problem remained.
Workaround: None. Downgrade to VLC 0.8.1 and files play fine.
Notes: The video files tend to play fine in 0.8.1, but 0.8.2 skips badly - missing entire 5-second blocks of video and audio.

Thanks,
Phil.

I think that VLC had better MKV support in 0.8.1 too. After I installed 0.8.3 MKV files ran very bad laging forward way to much. VLC you need to check whats up with that :)

MKV files played in 0.8.1 fine but now in 0.8.2, when I play a MKV file, VLC uses up 100% of my 3.2ghz processor and my computer is practically frozen. I just happened to have task manager opened at the time. :3

Now I have two copies of VLC :/

This should be fixed in the next nightly build. Except that nightlies are broken for the moment... Just be patient.

Hi,

Hate that this post has to be my first one, but I've got the same issue... with version 0.8.1. The video will play for a couple of seconds, then freeze, use 50% of my processor's ressources, and after about 20 seconds the file is closed (but not the program).

Could this be related or is it a totally different issue ?
