Frame-by-frame playback - reverse?

Frame-by-frame playback - reverse?

Postby aster » 22 May 2013 20:48

For many of my projects I need to take screenshots with very fine control, i.e. frame-by-frame units. I know that "E" will *advance* the film frame-by-frame, but for the life of me can't figure out the control to do this backwards.

At this point if I miss the exact frame I need to capture, have to skip back a few seconds and then slowly make my way through again, surely there must be a way to just do a one frame reverse step - what's the control for this? Thanks.

No, you cannot with VLC.

Is there already a option for this?
I urgently miss this too.
I can not understand why there is only a frame forward Button ...

No. Most media containers are meant to be played forward only.

There is a rising tide of demand for basic video analysis tools like this. Maybe it's time to invest in buffering back a couple of keyframes. N'est pas?

Patch welcome.

I still think it's mostly impossible. Professional video editors can do it, but they only support dedicated containers (supporting random access) and codec profiles (intra-only). VLC has to support everything, and most things just aren't compatible with reverse playback, frame-by-frame or otherwise.
