How to auto scan computer for media files?

I don't see a tool or prompt to auto scan my computer for all media files. In using both WMP and Media Monkey, I get a prompt to automatically upload all media files into the library, but in VLC, all I see is how to manually upload files one at a time. That can't be right. What am I missing?
