Glitched/distored video with .wmv files

Postby Comraderoboto » 18 Jan 2013 15:31

When I'm trying to play a .wmv file (most of them not all), the picture (not the vid) immediately pauses a few seconds and then I get a glitched image for a few seconds. Something like the image below. Also, when I go forward in the video timeline, the exact same thing happens for a few seconds. But that's only when I click 1 or 2 times in the timeline at the third click everything is normal. I'm on windows 7 64-bit and I also have K-lite installed. Does anyone know how I can fix this?

Try to remux the file with AsfBin(Win) while forcing the recreation of the index in the options.

If it still doesn't help then upload a short sample of a problematic file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to EmbedUpload.com, the latter will upload the file for you to several other hosts and then post the link to the file here.

Thanks for your reply. I'm sure this doesn't happen if I convert my wmv files to another type. But I don't want to convert every time I download a wmv file. I don't think I can upload a sample here because the videos are basically porn, so yeah. I have in the meant time found the correct term for what I'm experiencing: "seeking artifacts". What I tried, without any luck, was switching video acceleration off and changing the video output. I guess some option or so must be wrong, because VLC should play wmv files without any problem right?

I'd also like to add that wmv plays the files just fine, no artifacts, so I guess it's a problem purely to do with VLC.

AsfBin(Win) will not convert but remux the files, it's a lossless process. For some reason it seems that a lot of these 'special' WMVs are strangely made and a remux can help in many cases.

Yes that solves it thanks. But I still wonder why my wmv files are like that. It's not like they all come from the same uploader, they do come from the same site however. Weird.
