VLC for DJing: enqueue a song in the playlist?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

VLC for DJing: enqueue a song in the playlist?

Postby bwpearre » 27 Jul 2009 20:00

Hi!

I am trying to switch from xmms/audacious to vlc. So far I've only encountered one real problem.

I like to load all of my music (eg. vlc ~/music). Then I want to scroll through the playlist window and enqueue songs in the order in which I want them played (or let my guests at a party do the same, jukebox-style). Under xmms, I select a song in the playlist and press "q", which adds that song to the queue (indicated by a little rectangle containing the number in the queue, which is decremented each time the playlist moves to the next song). The songs are still sorted however I chose so I can still find them quickly, but now I can control the play order independently of the display order. If the queue is empty, song selection reverts to sorted/random/etc.

The songs look like they can be dragged and dropped. But that fails for two reasons. First, if I've requested alphabetical sorting and I drag one, should it be moved, breaking the sort request that I made? Second, dragging an item through a list of 500 songs looking for the one that's currently playing so I can drop the next song in after that really sucks.

I can't find this in the docs--I've found how to do it via commandline, but this is one case in which I don't want to use the commandline. I've found a few slightly related posts in the fora, but not this particular question. The wiki doesn't address it at all AFAICT--I'm probably blind.

Please tell me I can do this!? Or should I post it under "feature requests"?

Many thanks!!

EXACTLY!
I'm having the same issue and frankly am qurious as to how come we are the only ones that are bothered by this!?

This is actually the only reason I'm considering ditching VLC for music purposes.
