Newbie needs help converting a DVD to mp4

Postby basstubm » 19 Dec 2012 18:20

Hello,

I am trying for the first time to convert a DVD I have purchased to mp4 so that I can play it on a mobile device.
I am able to get an mp4 video using the convert menu but it has no audio.

Also, I am only getting one chapter and not the whole disc.

I am sure it is a simple thing like not using the proper settings, and would appreciate very much some help.

Thank you!!

Ok, just tried using Handbrake and it said the disc is copy protected. It seems that since I have bought the disc legally, I should be able to convert it to mp4 so I can play it on a mobile device like my phone or a kindle.

Is there some other way to do this?

Thanks!

@basstubm - Most production DVD's are encrypted (potected) there are programs that handle this. AnyDvd is an interface program that works in the background as a go between your dvd rom and what ever program that tries to access the drive, I use this in combination with Dvd Shrink 3.2 to create .iso (disk image file) and then Virtual clone drive to mount it. You can be picky and get the full mirror of the factory disk with menus and features that you never use or just get the movie using that space for better quality in to a playable dvd image file (you can burn directly to dvd disk if you have nero installed) either way you end up with a dvd that handbrake can use. There is another program called DvdFab that has dvd protection removal built in with dvd authorizing features built in. There is another great program called ConvertX that will take virtually any video file and turn it in to a dvd burning direct to disk or .iso image file. Been doing this for a long time, have over 1600 dvd iso files in my library.

It is easier to use AnyDvd to read the protected disk and then TMPGENC by Pegasys to rip it to mp4.
My desktop runs 64-bit Linux Mint Maya Xfce, my htpc runs Linux Mint Nadia Xfce, my answering machine runs Windows 7, and my laptop runs 64-bit Linux Mint Maya Mate.
