VLC records to .ts (audio) file instead of .flv (video) file

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

VLC records to .ts (audio) file instead of .flv (video) file

Postby MegaMan88 » 25 Oct 2012 07:06

Hi,

I used to be able to use the red record function (from the advanced controls) to record a clip/segment of a longer video or video clip .
The file would generally save as .flv (video) file to my videos where I could then click on the file and watch and listen to the clip in vlc player after recording.
Now instead, the file saves as a .ts (audio) extension with the ending saved as: [genericfilename].avi-.ts.
I do notice that based on the size and length of the new file, it is actually a video file (i.e. recent file saved as 38MB for 2 min played)
Can somebody help? I think the issue is that it is trying to save as a .avi file instead of the default .flv.
I'm not sure nor am I sure where to go to make the change.
Please help.

Thank you!

I hope my edit is clearer for those viewing.
Sorry for any earlier confusion.
If there is still confusion, please reply and I will revise to make even clearer.

This depends on the codec of the input. Please share the input file.

How am I to share the input file? I don't see how I can upload it or do you want some other information from the file?
Thanks for helping...sorry for the delay.

Upload a short sample of a file to either http://streams.videolan.org/upload/ or to EmbedUpload.com, so it will upload the file for you to several other hosts, and then post the link to the file here.

Hi, thank you Lotesdelere for the reply. I have uploaded the file to the site (streams.videolan.org) as directed. I also have an update on my issue.
After some additional troubleshooting, I found out that I CAN!! record from .flv files (with the recorded output segment having both video AND audio).
The problem seems to be isolated to .avi files.
The recorded output files from record session using .avi files save like so: vlc-record-[date][time][FileName].avi-.ts

I uploaded the file, but it did not point me to where the file is located at on the site and where it would be the VLC directory.
I it titled "Tea For One-Jimmy Page & Robert Plant_13.Feb.1996@Tokyo Budokan". It has an .avi file extension.

This is Normal. VLC refuses to record h264 in avi, since this is bad practice.

I'm very happy to see that this issue is essentially resolved then. I guess my confusion in this was that I thought that I had been able to record any video of my preference. Since the avi video file format is my default video file choice since I can remember and since I have recorded a number of things in the past, I'm wondering why I am now facing this? I thought even just a month or so ago when I was recording stuff, I would have selected at least one of my avi video files and got video back from that. Did VLC ever at one point accept avi files with the Hh264 codec for recording?
Anyway, I just used one of my converters to change the file extension over to .mp4 and I got my video now.
I never figured out why I chose the avi file format over others. From what I can remember, the first video file extension I encountered was the wmv and in the early days, it contained certain restrictions like the wma music files so I avoided them where I could and began to switch items over to avi or mp3 for audio.
From what I know now, there are many video file formats. Two other popular types I have considered are the mp4 and flv. Other less popular file formats are mov mpeg mkv and rmvb (last one I know is big in China though).
What do you recommend and what is the variation among them?
Feel free to redirect me to a good webpage addressing this inquiry.

Merci beaucoup/Thank you Jean and Lotesdelere for you continued and diligent support.

Cordialement,

Kevin

mp4 is a fine format. MKV is better though...
