External subtitles disappear halfway through DVD

Postby mompou » 09 Jun 2012 07:23

(Opening a new topic as I could only find this issue discussed in the Windows-specific category)

So... has this problem been addressed? I'm having the same problem - tried searching this forum & elsewhere for solutions but could only find the same question over and over again.

I'm trying to play a DVD with external subtitles from a .srt file (the file is perfectly OK), and every time the subs disappear exactly halfway through and can't be reloaded. I suspect it has something to do with the DVD layer change?

VLC version 2.0.1 Twoflower (Mac OS X, but apparently it's not os-related)

Thanks in advance for any help with this issue!

I did some testing and here's what I found:

The total time of the title is 1:59:53. The subtitles work well when I start playing (drag and drop onto movie window), and drop out at about 1:06:00 - presumably the layer break position.

After that, when I reload them (drag and drop), they start playing again from zero, so that for example at 1:43:38 (see picture below) I get subtitles from 00:37:41 (the drop out point + subtitle timecode).

Now the obvious way to circumvent this would be to chop the .srt in two and reload after layer break, BUT that would require finding out the exact break point in advance, which in turn requires ripping the whole disc for analysis - which seems a tad inconvenient. Could this be fixed in some easier way?

Here's a screen shot to illustrate the issue (.srt reloaded after layer break):

Should this issue be reported as a bug, or is it inherently unfixable? VLC is currently the only media player for Mac that is able to display external subs on a DVD, and many people reported this problem already on this forum.

(For the record, I tried the "open without menu" suggested in some of those previous threads, but it has no effect)

(edit: I just tried this on another media player, which was clearly worse at handling the break - not only did it restart the subtitles similarly, but also resetted the time counter when the break occurred...)

Does the log tell you something when dropping out? (Window -> Messages)

Everyone can post the report to the VLC Trac.

Yes, sorry - I should've checked that earlier! Here's what it says exactly at the break point:

main warning: clock gap, unexpected stream discontinuity
main warning: feeding synchro with a new reference point trying to recover from clock gap
main warning: early picture skipped
main warning: early picture skipped
main warning: received buffer in the future

I also checked the log from the moment of loading the .srt file, it loads OK.

OK, I filed a bug report on Trac as I guess it is indeed a bug.

It would be interesting to know if anyone else can duplicate this problem? It's actually quite easy to make it occur, you don't have to know where the layer break is - just download an .srt file for any dual-layer DVD you have on hand, load the DVD & the .srt and cue to any point near the end of film. If the bug occurs you won't get any subs on screen.

main warning: clock gap, unexpected stream discontinuity

is indeed the problem.
