Can you export/import customized hotkey settings?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Can you export/import customized hotkey settings?

Postby Eoghanar » 30 Aug 2012 07:25

(I'm assuming this wouldn't be OS specific, unless the answer is something like "they're stored in a file in such'n'such directory".)

So, can you?

I only found one post on the forums about it from a couple years back, and there were no replies.

Which is?

I tried searching "preference" in VLC in my program files, but...

Nor does searching the wiki or google for "preference file" easily find the info.

Aha! Is it "hotkeys.luac" that I want?

EDIT: It wasn't; I tried copying it to VLC on my other computer and it did nothing I could see. Then I replaced it with the backup I made, just in case.

Found it!
Windows 95/98/ME: C:\Windows\Application Data\vlc\vlcrc
Windows 2000/XP: C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\vlc\vlcrc
Windows Vista/7: C:\Users\%username%\Application Data\vlc\vlcrc
It didn't occur to me to google "vlcrc" first cuz I kinda assumed the "rc" was a typo without really thinking about it :P

Head. Hit. Keyboard.

Turns out it's not there either.

I searched my entire harddrive and couldn't find anything named "vlcrc" anywhere....

FINALLY! ACTUAL SUCCESS!

The actual path for Windows Vista/7 is:

Code: Select all

C:\Users\[user]\AppData\Roaming\vlc
NOT:

Code: Select all

C:\Users\%username%\Application Data\vlc\vlcrc
Verified by moving the vlcrc file from one computer to the other, and the hotkey settings DID change

Okay, so I opened the file with notepad and ctrl-f'd a bit, and found the key settings ARE in there in a human readable format (not EASILY, but...)

The hotkey settings seem to start at "Control interfaces" and... end right before "Simple DirectMedia Layer video output"?

Seems like an automated import/export system would be relatively easy to set up.
