trouble achieving 120Hz output / reporting achieved fps

Postby ivoVLC » 22 Aug 2012 00:04

Hi,

I’m trying to use VLC mp (2.0.3) to display simple, non-interlaced, AVIs at 800 by 600 pixels with a projector at 120Hz. Supposedly, the Vivitek D530 DLP projector I’m using should be able to project at 120Hz (it reports it’s projecting at 120.36Hz). With my laptop (see below for specs), through an HDMI cable, however I seem to only be able to get VLC to display the video at around 60 Hz. Reducing the graphical demand by playing 80X60 pxls AVIs does not solve the problem.

I have two questions:

1. (main question) Is there any way to get VLC to report the achieved frame rate, as opposed to the desired frame rate? For some reason, the frame rate I set the AVI to be (120.36Hz) doesn’t seem to get achieved. I’m calling VLC via Matlab (but get identical results when initiating VLC directly) using:
start "120.36Hz_testvid.avi" /b /realtime "C:\Program Files (x86)\VideoLAN\VLC\vlc.exe" --loop --no-video-title-show --no-media-library --no-interact --qt-minimal-view --no-qt-notification --no-qt-system-tray --no-sub-autodetect-file --no-ffmpeg-hurry-up --no-skip-frames --video-on-top --rate=1

2. Is it possible the graphics capabilities of my system are just too limited, or may VLC be playing the video at a higher frame rate than I’m seeing displayed? I’m using a high speed camera to film the projector output, since filming my 60 Hz laptop screen would be pointless, and am finding a roughly 60 Hz output.

Hopefully these questions are clear enough, any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
ivo

i'm suspecting my graphics card just can't deal with the high frame rate. In VLC preferences (general video settings), when 'drop late frames' and 'skip frames' are unchecked, the AVIs play much slower than when either or both of these options are checked. When 'drop late frames' is checked, the output statistics (under Media information via Ctrl+i) do show a good portion of the frames as lost.

will keep on looking for a way to display the output frame rate.

thanks,
ivo
