VLC is unable to play very short and small audio files.

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

VLC is unable to play very short and small audio files.

Postby Josemr » 18 Aug 2012 20:48

Hi all VLC Staff and Members, I just want to share an VLC issue that has been around for quiet some time, yet unaddressed. :(

VLC is unable to play very short and small audio files (few milliseconds files) like beep\clicks, I tested it with .wav and .mp3 files under Windows(Win7 x64) and Linux(Ubuntu 12.04 x86), however I can play this small audio files without any issues in Windows Media Player and MPC-HC(Win7 x64) and in Rhythmbox(Ubuntu 12.04 x86), I just can use any other Media Player as for workaround, but for persons like me who have VLC as a Default Media Player for this kind of files, are quiet annoying when you edit multiples small files, since I have VLC as Default for .mp3 and .wav, is time consuming every time I edit small audio files I need to right click the file and "Open with" to choose another Player instead of double click the file (under windows also similar on Linux) I've waited since VLC version 1.x before posting this, hoping on a fix, but appears that this issue hasn't been addressed yet.

Note: I'm very sorry if I misplaced this post, or if there are a similar one regarding this post, however I was unable to find a similar thread when searching.
Also I'm sorry for my English.

Best Regards!

I think 2.0.1 is better for that than 1.1.x, right?

When I said I've waited since version 1.x, My Logic say that I have and I'm also talking about the Latest version, yet with the same issue since 1.x right?
PS:
Thanks for the input

Well, the cut should be shorter on 2.0.x on this issue.

The reason of this uncut scene is to show how long this issue has been around yet unaddressed, and for to give some intuitive/detailed explanation  (Contribution), I don't see any reason to cut my own experiences towards others. :?:

...I don't see any reason to cut my own experiences towards others...
I like this sentence very much :D
Well let's share some experiences then lol

I remember a time, a few years ago...I never heard of Vlc, playing all vids with WMP and Quicktime, and all audio files with Winamp.
Then a friend of mine told me about Vlc (probably it was 0.8.6 version or earlier), I tried it and liked it a lot.
So today it's Vlc full time for all video files (with MPC-HC as "secondary" program, in case there's a video file Vlc can't play correctly...which doesn't mean MPC-HC will be able to play it, but at least you got 2 good video programs installed)

What about audio files ?
Well I'm still using Winamp for all audio files (mp3, flac, ape, wav, ac3) because there's no need to change a program by another if the 1st program is truly satisfying. Winamp got its own Equalizer and plays smoothly all audio files I need, so there's no need to change. Btw, your two very tiny audio files play nicely in old Winamp (as I'm curious I downloaded them both !)

So that's my little experience : one program for one "task" : all videos with Vlc, all audios with Winamp, converting files with programs natively dedicated to conversions, extracting parts of videos with programs created for that etc...
When you see it this way, you avoid a lot of problems that may occur in case you use a single program to do different tasks.

And thumbs up to the great people here, in the Forum, that bring daily advices and solutions.
Have a great summer :D

all videos with Vlc, all audios with Winamp...
I do like this sentence :)

I also like your experience and all the sense it makes, I'm gonna try that one, I will stay with VLC for video and get an audio optimized player for all my audio files... humm I will try Winamp :D
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Regards!
