Problem with .asx files

Postby Boo2 » 03 Aug 2012 22:57

Hi,

I use .asx files to organise my music and have associated them with VLC (version 2.0.3 Twoflower) so I can play complete ablums by opening the relevant .asx file in VLC. I have an issue in that when I open some of my .asx files the track titles are not displayed by VLS in the playlist whilst others work fine. In the playlists that don't work the track Title fields are all of the form "AudioTrack01" etc, Duration and Album seem to be picked up OK.

An example of an .asx file which works OK is :

Code: Select all

<ASX version = "3.0">
Everything Must Go

01-Elvis Impersonator_ Blackpool Pier.mp3
<REF HREF = "01-Elvis Impersonator_ Blackpool Pier.mp3" />

02-A Design For Life.mp3
<REF HREF = "02-A Design For Life.mp3" />

03-Kevin Carter.mp3
<REF HREF = "03-Kevin Carter.mp3" />

04-Enola_Alone.mp3
<REF HREF = "04-Enola_Alone.mp3" />

05-Everything Must Go.mp3
<REF HREF = "05-Everything Must Go.mp3" />

06-Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky.mp3
<REF HREF = "06-Small Black Flowers That Grow In The Sky.mp3" />

07-The Girl Who Wanted To Be God.mp3
<REF HREF = "07-The Girl Who Wanted To Be God.mp3" />

08-Removables.mp3
<REF HREF = "08-Removables.mp3" />

09-Australia.mp3
<REF HREF = "09-Australia.mp3" />

10-Interiors (Song For Willem De Kooning).mp3
<REF HREF = "10-Interiors (Song For Willem De Kooning).mp3" />

11-Further Away.mp3
<REF HREF = "11-Further Away.mp3" />

12-No Surface All Feeling.mp3
<REF HREF = "12-No Surface All Feeling.mp3" />
</ASX>
An apparently similar file which does not work is :

Code: Select all

<ASX version = "3.0">
Modern Times

01-Carol.mp3
<REF HREF = "01-Carol.mp3" />

02-Sirens Of Titan.mp3
<REF HREF = "02-Sirens Of Titan.mp3" />

03-What's Going On.mp3
<REF HREF = "03-What's Going On.mp3" />

04-Not The One.mp3
<REF HREF = "04-Not The One.mp3" />

05-Next Time.mp3
<REF HREF = "05-Next Time.mp3" />

06-Apple Cider Reconstitution.mp3
<REF HREF = "06-Apple Cider Reconstitution.mp3" />

07-Dark And Rolling Sea.mp3
<REF HREF = "07-Dark And Rolling Sea.mp3" />

08-Modern Times.mp3
<REF HREF = "08-Modern Times.mp3" />

09-News From Spain.mp3
<REF HREF = "09-News From Spain.mp3" />

10-Elvaston Place.mp3
<REF HREF = "10-Elvaston Place.mp3" />

11-Swallow Wind.mp3
<REF HREF = "11-Swallow Wind.mp3" />
</ASX>

If you take one mp3 of the non-working .asx and you copy it to one of working one and name it like an existing mp3. Does it work?

If I do that then the file from the working directory shows up in the playlist as it's proper name (not the new name from the non-working album).

Thanks,

Boo

So, the issue is not the .asx, but some .mp3 that do not show infos, right?

Well, the issue is that VLC does not get the .mp3 info from the .asx file. Most of my mp3 files do not have metadata and I would prefer to keep it that way.

If the .asx file is correct (and I could find no error myself) then is there a reason VLC cannot show the info from that entries there ? Is there a switch or something I need to turn on in the UI ?

Thanks for your time and efforts in replying,

Boo

Well, VLC takes metadata from the files, not from the playlist. Fill free to file a bug.
