How to maintain file associations during update?

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

How to maintain file associations during update?

Postby genegold » 11 Jul 2012 07:05

I'm using Win 7x64 but assume this is general. I have some types of files set to run in VLC and some with other similar apps. During an update, such as this last one to 2.0.2, there doesn't seem to be anyway to maintain the previous file associations (vs. the general settings). From what I can tell, the uninstall step changes the former VLC associations to Windows defaults, thus forcing the user to have to start again. At least that's how it appeared from what was checked in the associations box during the reinstall, and then afterwards in Windows Default Programs > file associations. Is that right? If so, I don't understand why it's being done that way.

Afterthought: During the update I chose the uninstall option. Is the problem avoided if it isn't chosen?

This is a known limitation.
