Error in DVD playback

I've read that you can use VLC player to play DVDs from alternate regions so I'm attempting to use the player to play a Japanese DVD from 2002. I can load the start menu, but anything beyond that gives me error messages. When trying to load one file manually, this is what it gave me:

You should not open the .vob directly. Open the VIDEO_TS folder with VLC or use the .ifo
