VLC multi-part rar support is BROKEN in 2.0 and 2.0.1

VLC multi-part rar support is BROKEN in 2.0 and 2.0.1

Postby koksalt » 19 Feb 2012 14:45

Seems like the support for playing multi-part/spanned archives is broken in VLC 2.0. It was working (quite) fine in version 1.11.X.

It plays the first file of the archvie ( .rar) , but it doesn't contniue to .r00, r01 ... etc It just stops. Doesn't matter if its an avi or mkv file and all files are uncompressed.

I am using windows 7 64 bit, but I have the same problem on OSX 10.7. So it seems to be platform independent.

I have also tried the latest nightly of 2.1 and it has the same problem :(

Update: Still broken i 2.0.1 Now it stops later on, always at the same time, but different times in different videos. One movie stops at X minutes, another stops at Y minutes.
If you have this problem please confirm it in thread and tell what version operative system you are using.

Update: Seems to be fixed for the next release of VLC :).

Been running the nightlies and now 2.0.1 - ubuntu 11.10 and multi-part rar support is not working for me either. Works fine in old 1.11 builds...

There is an ticket on the bug tracker now
https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/6033

It says Platform(s): MacOS, but its should be all. Maybe someone could update this so that it gets more attention from the devs.

Same problem on Windows. Unlike the ticket, for me on Windows 7 X64, it does not indicate the correct duration. Only the duration of the first rar.

Also Same Problem with MKV multipart .001 files !!!
myvideo.mkv.001
myvideo.mkv.002
myvideo.mkv.003
and so on...

VLC 2.0 ONLY playing .001 file duration while Previous Version of VLC 1.xx plays automatically the other files (.002 , .003)

Please Fix this Prob in Newer Version VERY SOON.

same issue with rar files here (mostly .avi archived in them) win 7 32 bit
when i drag the first .rar file onto vlc player, it pops up a window saying "Broken or missing AVI Index"
I hit the "Build index then play" button, and it plays and shows the duration of only the first rar.
(vlc 1.0 plays the same archive without any issues)

is there any information i can extract that might help resolving this problem faster?
Think for yourself, question authority

Thank you, it seems to be fixed, but it's not really. Now it doesn't stop after the first rar, so that is good. Now it stops later on, always at the same time, but different times in different videos. One movie stops at 7 minutes, another stops at 51 minutes. I have only seen it with mkv files, but i don't have any large packaged avi files.

I know that is there is no errors in rar packaging because the videos plays completely with MPC and RARFileSource filter.

With logger i get the following error when the movie stops

Code: Select all

[000000000048cdc8] main playlist: stopping playback [0000000002268d08] mkv demux error: cannot load some cues/chapters/tags etc. (broken seekhead or file) [00000000048cdd68] dts decoder: DTS channels:6 samplerate:48000 bitrate:1536000 Stream with high frequencies VQ coding MKV/Ebml Parser: m_el[mi_level] == NULL MKV/Ebml Parser: Up cannot escape itself
If I re-compress the movies with smaller or larger rar-splits, it still stops at the same time.

If I start the same mkv movie uncompressed, I got the same errors when open the video in the beginning. But it doesnt stop.

Code: Select all

[0000000004a1e798] mkv demux error: cannot load some cues/chapters/tags etc. (broken seekhead or file) [00000000022ea298] dts decoder: DTS channels:6 samplerate:48000 bitrate:1536000 Stream with high frequencies VQ coding MKV/Ebml Parser: m_el[mi_level] == NULL MKV/Ebml Parser: Up cannot escape itself
Seems like its more fault sensitive when playing from rars. But I don't recognize this behavior from VLC 1.X

Tested with nightly 2.1 and 2.01 as of today @ win7 64bit.

Can you share the whole verbose logs?
Sure, I love to help

Here is verbose logs of 5 videos, 3 which stops and 2 that don't stops (for comparison).

Note1. The movie always stops at the same time and it doesn't matter if seeking before or not.
Note2. It doesn't matter if I disable video output or audio output. It still stops.
Note3. All videos are mkvs and plays good with MPC and RARFileSource or uncompressed.
Note4. GPU acceleration was enabled during the logs but I got the same result when its was disabled.

Video 1.
Open, plays ok-->then I jump to 55min, still plays ok-> Stops @ 57min
Log: http://pastebin.com/MUPAfhaE

Video 2.
Open, plays ok--> then I jump to 9:11min, still plays ok -> stops at 9min30s
Log: http://pastebin.com/CLaXeKzh

Video 3.
Open, plays ok, stops at 6:37
Log: http://pastebin.com/5GU5u8Ye

4. For comparison: These two works good, (although a got some other errors on with second one, but it doesnt stop)

Code: Select all

http://pastebin.com/65aYBrj9 http://pastebin.com/q1C91f8z
VLC version used: vlc-2.1.0-git-20120301-0403
System: Windows 7 Pro sp1 64 bit

I have the same exact problem that koksalt described.

I would like to add that this problem only occurs (at least for me) when attempting to play back archives which have been created using RAR-archiving v2.9. When the older archiving from RAR version 2.0 is used, there is no problem. As we know, RAR v2.9 introduced a new method of archive creation.

The newly released official VLC v2.0.1 gives this error message twice when attempting to play back an examplary archive consisting of .rar + .r00-.r92 (sorry, it's in German language):

Code: Select all

Einlesen der Datei fehlgeschlagen: VLC konnte die Datei "C:\xyz\xyz.r93" nicht lesen. (%m)
Notice how it complains that file .r93 was not found even though the archive is complete (unrars fine) and only goes up to .r92 (i.e. VLC expects more files than there actually are)!

Also the seeking in rared videos is considerably slower, if the archive was created using RAR v2.9.

I think I read somewhere that the header structure was changed for RAR v2.9, so my (uneducated) guess would be, that VLC misinterprets the header and expects more files than there are which in turn possibly breaks the seeking.

Also I would like to add that I tried to play back such RAR v2.9-archives using older versions of VLC before and always failed. Only VLC 2.0/2.0.1 enabled the playback of such files (to my knowledge), even though it still is buggy.

I'm not sure that is the same problem. This thread is about a bug that was introduced in VLC v 2.0. First playback stopped after the first rar, then it was partitally fixed in the alfa and still broken 2.01. What happens is that it stops later on, always at the same time, but different times in different videos. One movie stops at 7 minutes, another stops at 51 minutes, etc. (It doesnt matter if the video was compressed with winrar 2.0 or 2.9)

But yes, On some vidoes I have got the the error you are talking about, it generates the same message, but the moive plays along fine.

Code: Select all

File reading failed: VLC could not open the file "E:\Movie\The.Ghost.Writer.2010.1080p.BluRay.X264-AMIABLE\tgwrit.1080p-amb.r93". (%m)
The weird thing is that only uncompressed archives uses version RAR 2.0, an archive created with version RAR 2.9 means that it was compressed (which is not supported by VLC)...
I'm not able to create a uncompressed rar-archive (store option) other than RAR 2.0 (Using WinRAR 4.11).. I think uncompressed (store option) rar-archives with 2.9 is produced from a buggy and older version of WinRAR.

Indeed, the problem seems to fixed now (apart from the odd error message about "missing rar-files" which are in fact not missing). :) Thanks a lot!
