How to play 3d sbs mkvs?

Hello all,

I recently purchased a 3d projector and want to try the 3d feature out. I thought about connecting my laptop via HDMI to the projector and using an external sound card for 5.1 sound to connect it to the receiver so as to skip the fuzz with PS3 media server. I use the VLC media player. Can it play 3d sbs mkvs and will my projector recognise the 3d signal? Do I need a plugin?

Please forgive me if this has been answered before, but I do not find relevant topics using the term 3d mkvs in the search field.
