Playing RTMP/HTTP streams and command interface

Postby ConfusedFully » 02 Sep 2011 07:13

First of all, I have to say that I am not very tech-savvy. I am trying to get VLC to play a webstream embedded on a webpage and I have tried copying and pasting the http URL into VLC and it doesn't work. Right-clicking the webstream doesn't give me a URL at all. When the stream was over, the box where the stream was gave an RTMP address and I put that into VLC as well and it didn't even try to open.

I have read that you can access a command interface and get VLC to play RTMP and HTTP webstreams, but no one tells you how to access the command interface!!

How do you get to the command interface??

That should be in your operating system documentation.

Sorry...I don't see it. I have spent hours looking for it.

Basically, it says to ADD INTERFACE and go TELNET. Nothing happens. I see no way of accessing the interface. I tried the CMD from my computer and it doesn't work either.

Ready to give up at this point.

in vlc, : View -> Add interface -> telnet
then on your OS command line, telnet localhost 4212

I added the Telnet through the VLC menu, but I can't access any sort of command interface. I went to START/RUN on my PC and entered CMD and then the telnet localhost 4212 and it says "telnet is not recognized as an internal or external command."

I am sure I'm not doing this right. I can't find a place to get the command interface going. Once I do that, I might be able to get VLC to play the web streams I need.

I am not a programmer....I am an average noob.

I was able to get into the VLC command area on my PC, but was unable to get it to play RTMP streams. I am told you need to run the program RTMTdump. There are tons of lines of code in there you have to write into command interface and I wouldn't know the first way to get it done.

Also, my ultimate goal is to watch streams on my HP Touchpad tablet and it only works if it plays in ORB. Even if I get the streams to play in VLC through some miracle, I already tried the RTMP streams through ORB and I got error messages. So, it wouldn't work anyway.
