Convert a video to several images... ?

VLC has quite changed, I found an old thread about a guy who wants to convert a VCD to JPEGs, but I'm not sure it works with the new version of VLC.

Basically I want to convert a little video I made to JPEGs or PNGs so I can make a gif out of it after. I can't see that option in the "advanced open file", I want to teach my gf how to make GIFs, and compiling/installing FFmpeg on a mac is not an option (takes lot of time on a laptop).

Any idea ? Can I use VLC with a command line with the mac version ?

And no MacPort crap, I removed it, our laptop don't have a lot of disk space...

With VLC you can do this:
