Malware warning on 1.1.11 - phone home

Postby cruznsquaw » 13 Aug 2011 08:45

How is it that after all these years of wondferul VideoLAN Open Source software we went without those things that were NOT appreciated in other players. Here we have a version that sekurity agencies love with all these ones and now I get the malware warning on installation of this version?
How do we know what this is doing?
How does the non-techie know there isn't some kind of rootkit installed?

What's up with this?!
Please post the in's & out's of why this was done and what can be done to get rid of whatever nefarious code was installed.
I would have loved to click the 'donate' button, but put off by this action.
Thank you.

There is no malware in the original VLC. Are you sure you downloaded the right one from videolan.org and not a scam site?

I did the software update through the 'Help' menu. Normal. Just before the final installation process completed, ESET popped up with a warning that the installation contained malware. Of course I selected to block it. But what's even more strrange is I looked through the quarantine log and there was no mention of the intruder. I should have taken a screen shot before clicking the 'Delete' button.

I was as surprised as anyone could be when the warning appeared. This was with my I-don't-care-about-this-laptop unit, so I'm not so worried about what gets on it. But I do have a system that I keep well protected against -anything-, based on principle.

Thanks for your inquest. I wonder if anyone else has experienced this.
