Sound Randomly Doesn't Play

I've been having an issue for quite a while where VLC won't play any sound when I open a file. If I restart or reopen the file, it fixes this issue. This is really annoying and only happens about 1 out of every 5 times I open something (its completely random and inconsistent). I've updated my player more than once, with no change. This happens to all file types I play (mostly avi, flv and mp4). Any ideas?

4.4.4, and Vista 64, but as I said, the version of vlc is irrelevant. I've updated over 4 times, completely uninstalled and reinstalled from scratch and this still happens.

There's no such thing as VLC 4.4.4 to begin with.

But honestly, this has been an issue through several updates. Right now I'm running the current version because I always hope that updating fixes things. This is an ongoing issue not tied to the version it seems.

Okay, but I don't see how I'm not explaining it correctly. The version says 1.1.11, which is current which is what I said before.

Try to change audio output module in preferences.
