Won't Play Anything

I just downloaded VLC media player to try to play a .mp4 file. Well after downloading I tried to play the file and I don't hear or see anything. All I see is the orange cone...I don't even see the bar moving. I also tried another video that I know plays on my computer that isn't a .mp4 file and it does the same thing. I need help!!!

show the logs : tools -> messages -> verbosity 2

I think your mp4 file is broken then.
Show the logs for the non-mp4 files not working.
