Subtitle Auto Load and 5.1 Speakers support

For questions and discussion that is NOT (I repeat NOT) specific to a certain Operating System.

Subtitle Auto Load and 5.1 Speakers support

Postby henrique » 17 Jun 2005 00:39

Hi there,

I've been a happy VLC user since earlier versions, and now I get the oportunity to give some feedback.

Well, I've been testing 0.8.2 test 2 for a while and basically I've got three issues, not bugs, but features (one removed and two ohers that could be included):

1. About subtitle auto load: in vlc 0.8.1, there were a parameter (something like 'subtitle auto load track' where I could set the subtitle track to be auto loaded. It's default value was '-1', but if set to '0' it would load the first track associated to that running video file. I couldn't find this parameter anymore, in 0.8.2 test 2.

2. Still about the subtitles, I guess VLC should have a 'bold' option (the subtitle font seems too thin).

3. I've been having some difficulties to play videos with stereo audio (2.0) in 5.1 output. I can't have center channel emulated. I wanted this feature, so I could have a virtual center channel and then a full 5.1 audio output. Actually, this happens with most of windows applications. But I thought that VLC could be superior. :wink: I thought of something like Winamp KB 5.1 Channel Output Plugin (http://www.winamp.com/plugins/details.php?id=129453). Even when the mp3 file only has 2 native audio channels, it emulates the others and outputs full 5.1.

BTW, congrats for VLC! It's the greatest.

1: Prefences->Input/Codecs/Advanced->Choose subtitles track
2: I agree, it is on a very long list of subtitle functionality that we desire
3: Correct we do no do this. Mostly because it's actually quite a complex operation to do. Also because we consider this to be a Soundcard driver issue. Many soundcards come with builtin systems to do this for stereo signals. SRS TruSurround XT and Advanced SRS CircleSurround II are examples of technologies that do this.
Don't use PMs for support questions.

thanks!

is it that difficult?
And I may be a little invasive (and repetitive) here, but what about VobSub compability?

I got some difficulties using CSII (its basically for WMP, aint it? I dont think it'll work for every audio application) and eventually was forced to uninstall it.

Abour SRS TruSurround. It appears to be a standard for creating a surround-like sound from just two speakers, not a 5.1 emulator. But thanks anyway. I'll continue my search. :)
