VLC Problems

Hi all

Ok, I have had a problem using VLC for a while now, have reinstalled, and it's up to date too. I would say for the last 6 months I've accounted problems. When I play a MP3 file it'll file, but then when I attempt to play another MP3 it freezes for no reason, and have to close it re open it again. Is there anything I can do to try and get some idea how to fix this ? Also, I have enabled the 'record' button on VLC interface, is there a way I can change the video output ? or does it only record in AVI ?
