Subtitle problem, working - not working

Postby Maarit » 18 Dec 2003 20:04

Hello!

I hope I can make my self understandable with my problem.
I have had VLC for a few versions and I love it. Then my friend wanted, and still wants, subtitles for the movies, and the hell begins  .

First it worked for a long time, then suddenly it stopped working during one movie. I think I hade change version the same day, (don’t remember witch one). After trying several things, changing back to older version, change fonts, uninstall and install again and nothing worked I gave up. Didn’t find any similar problem when I search the web and other forums so I thought Oh, what tha… and gave up.

A few days a go I thought that I should try again, WOW, suddenly it worked. I was so happy until the next day, it didn’t work again.
I tried to install “twins video player” and got subtitles but lousy picture. Tried VLC again and the s.title worked a gain. Yeah! I thought.
It worked for three days and today it stopped working again.

I GO CRAZY, I don’t know what is wrong, how can it work one minute and not the other#*^????

I have tried .avi with .sub .txt .srt – When it worked I could use every version and hade no problem with anything, now nothing works.
In message I get:
main: playlist item `C:\Program\Movie\movie_name.avi'
avi: subtitle started
freetype error: unknown chroma, can't render SPU

To day I had done nothing in between “everything working” and “nothing working”. (All I did was go to the store  ) Not installed or uninstalled, I have even thought unlogical things like “maybe it’s when I’m changing desktop themes or something, but no.
Now I have tried to uninstall the twinplayer and install again and do the same things as last time. Installed VLC about 5 times and so on, nothing is working. Even tried VLC 0.7.0.

(I use windows XP)

If anyone can help me it would save my Christmas :D /Maarit

Did you use the same movie, the same display settings (depth etc) ?

Yes, everything exactly the same. I'm not a newbe so you can exclude those things. :)

Well the subtitle renderer has detected a chroma that is not supported.
So for some reason, that changed.
probably a directx problem or something..?
Try upgrading that and your video drivers.
That's about the only thing that springs to mind.

Subtitles

Postby Manque » 23 Dec 2003 23:02

Hi,
I have no idea how to help you there, but I am having problems with my vlc player and subtitles on my win xp computer as well and you guys seem to know a lot.

Subtitles have worked fine for me through the recent versions of vlc (0.6.0, 0.6.2 and 0.7.0-test1). The problem with those versions was that the video frame froze once an hour. I now try to use the 0.7.0-test2 version and I havent experienced a frame freeze yet. The problem is that I cant get subtitles to work at all on this version.

The same subtitles and movies that work on the previous versions of vlc doesnt work at all on the new one (0.7.0-test2). Is there a setting I have to change?
Help me plz.
Thanks.

Submit the subtitles to hartman at videolan dot org or the vlc-devel mailinglist. someone can then take a look at it.

You should also try to "Reset" your VLC preferences in the preferences panel.

Have you checked Video -> Subtitles Track?
For at least one of the movies that I've tried (with Subrip subtitles) I have found that the Subtitle Track is disabled, but that I can choose Track 1.

Very similar problem, except the subtitles will work, and if i happen to 'miss' a spot in a movie, and try to move it back, even if i only move the film back 5 seconds, the subtitles just stop working, they don't comeback, even after watching for the next hour(they are still enabled, and they DID work before)

Resetting it(IE Stopping the movie, restarting with the proper subtitle again) works, but if i try to advance the move, the subtitles stop working again.

You should try to choose another font file. The current one possibly does not exist.
With Ctrl + M you can read the message log. It tells you what's going wrong.
I hope this will help you.

Thanks Gibalou. out of nowhere VLC stopped playing subtitle files. admittedly I don't use them that often but last time they worked OK and this time no subtitles came up or any errors so I didn't know what to do. Resetting the preferences did it straight away,

if only I looked here first instead of wasting time and bandwidth finding and downloading a different version of the subtitles and then another version of the film to try and get it working.

This started happening to me recently, for anything, subs simply do not display in VLC...
I have tried it in tv shows, movies, whatever, they don't display.

I had the same problem I few days ago. Tried resetting the preferences, etc., and the subs were working fine on my other player.
Turned out the problem was with the CCCP. Now I can't tell you exactly why, since I didn't tweak any of the codec pack preferences. I just uninstalled it and the subs started working on VLC.
But I'm guessing there has to be a way to make them work together, if one looks into it.
