Idiots guide to Streaming?

I found an idiots guide for an older version of VLC, and it was not detailed enough. I am using version 1.1.9 on WindowsXP
I want to watch a DVD which is in the DVD drive on another computer. How do I do this?
I have done the following:
On the machine with the DVD drive I run VLC and do the following:
1) Media -> streaming ...
2) select disc tab
3) Browse to my DVD drive
4) Click the Stream button
5) On the next screen click Next
6) On Destinations page select UDP and click ADD
7) In Address box type IP address of destination machine, which in my case is 192.168.1.3
Click stream button.
VLC then says its streaming. It seems to keep playing a 44 second file over and over again.
How do I get it to stream the whole DVD?

On my destination machine I open VLC and do the following:
1) Media -> Open Network Stream
What do I type in the networl URL box?
I have tried udp://@:1234 but nothing plays

Select the whole DVD from the Open disc menu. Be sure do check the box to disable DVD menus. You can get to the Streaming wizard by clicking on the small triangle to the right of the Open button at the bottom of the dialog.

Thanks. That works - to a point!
I can now see my DVD on my remote machine - but the sound and video is incredibly broken and utterly unwatchable.
I have a wired cat5 network with no other traffic.
Is this supposed to work?
