Subtitles failing to load, but only some .srt files. Stumped

This is just loony. Any new .srt file I download is not working with VLC.

In short, all of the older vids + sub files I have work just fine. However, today i discovered that some recent ones do not work. Everything seems normal. The name of the video file is the same as the name of the .srt. They should autoload, but do not. Manually opening them doesn't work.

If I try to play via my PS3, they also do not work.

Opening the .srt files in notepad just shows me they look fine. Nothing is wrong. This should be simple stuff. But I am stumped.

Am I just missing something easy here? Why would three different .srt files just not load with VLC?
