Can't play avi files off of Data DVD

In an effort to free up space on my computer, I've burned a lot of video files to Data DVDs. The only thing is that VLC can't seem to play them directly from the DVD, saying that VLC is unable to open the MRL file. If I copy the file from the Data DVD onto a computer, I can play the file just fine. It's not a huge deal, it just defeats the purpose of making the DVD if I have to put the file back on my computer to watch it. I can play WMV files fine from the discs, so I don't think it's a problem with the software. Any advice?

The DVD menu is only for proper DVD Video. Otherwise, use normal file open.

I tried burning a data disc using a cd and vlc can play it fine off of that. It's just with the dvd that I can't play any avi file. From looking at a post about a similar problem I think it might have something to do with access rights, but I'm not sure. Here's the message log:
