PLEASE HELP! VLC stutters terribly

I love vlc and it's always worked fine,, but recently it's been stuttering to the point that the videos are unwatchable. I first thought disc space may cause it, so I cleaned everything up but the problem still exists. The video I'm trying to play is an .avi file with an .*** subtitle. Any help would be appreciated. I'm running vlc media play 1.0.2 goldeneye. I have Ubuntu 9.10- the Karmic Koala. I saw something about changing the cache, but I don't know how to it. Any help would GREATLY be appreciated.

1.0.2 is not supported anymore. You need to update.
