Reduce streaming quality

Postby kogan31 » 06 Jan 2011 12:31

Hi Guys!

I am trying to stream a channel from my work place. The video quality is quite high and i have a limited bandwidth. Is there anyway to reduce the streaming quality further so that the playback will be smooth? Currently i am experiencing frame by frame display.

Thank you!

You will need to reduce the stream output bandwidth to suit your available bandwidth. This will be the sum of vb=xx and ab=xx. Also reduce fps=xx to minimum acceptable quality
Then reduce/optimise the size of the video to suit. You can use scale=xx or (width=xx & height=xx)
Eg
vb=400,fps=25,ab=64,scale=0.5 (height=256,width=192 or equivilent instead of scale=xx)
The scale=xx is the major factor to reduce streaming quality to fit your available bandwidth, try this first.

does that mean i have to set my target to like ex.
"c:\program files\videolan\vlc\vlc.exe" vb=400,fps=25,ab=64,scale=0.5
?

thank you

No

Alter/add these settings in the :sout=#transcode.....

Eg

:sout=#transcode{vcodec=h264,vb=400,fps=25,scale=0.5,acodec=mp4a,ab=64,channels=2,samplerate=44100}:duplicate{dst=http{mux=ffmpeg{mux=flv},dst=:8080/},dst=display} :no-sout-rtp-sap :no-sout-standard-sap :ttl=1 :sout-keep

Hmm?

I think there may be some confusion as to what you are trying to achieve?
I am trying to stream a channel from my work place. The video quality is quite high and i have a limited bandwidth
Do you mean "You" are trying to initiate or transmit a stream from your workplace using VLC with limited bandwidth?
Or
Do you mean you are trying to recieve a stream with VLC from your workplace and your bandwidth (Eg slow downstream internet connection?) is limited?

If you could post back full details and explanation of what you are doing/trying to achieve

Hi Greg,

sorry for the confusion.

I am remoting into my office terminal and "Receiving" a stream from that terminal through UDP. As my home bandwidth is limited, that is affecting the video.

So i would need to set the receiving quality to a lower level if that is possible?

Not possible

The streaming source or transmitter will need to be at a lower bandwidth that you can receive.
