Never-ending rip

Postby bjones » 14 Dec 2010 22:05

Hi,

Although I'm using VLC on Windows Vista, this doesn't seem to be a Windows issue to me. If I'm wrong, please move the topic for me. Thanks.

First time attempting to rip a 50-minute documentary from a DVD. Based on several online sources, most of my VLC settings seem right. After choosing the right drive, etc., chose "Convert/Save". VLC showed "Streaming" started, not displaying locally as requested, elapsed time counter was progressing, a file was being created in the right destination location.

Problems began after the process ran long enough for the elapsed time counter to equal the video length (all 50 minutes being covered). At this point, I expected the process to end, resulting in one MP4 file. However, with the file created being roughly 400MB or so, the process did not stop. It appeared to begin again. Not knowing what to expect, I let it run and went to bed. In the morning, I discovered that it apparently ran through this loop a few times, saving data to the same file, which was now over 1GB in size, and was still in the process of doing it again.

The process only created one file, and that file had a .ps extension.

A few questions please:

1. Any idea why VLC did not stop at the end of the first pass through the disc?

2. During ripping (which seems now to have been abnormal behavior), the process was taking 2 or 3 seconds for every video second. In other words, the elasped time counter was running slower than actual time, such that one pass through the disc would take two or more times longer than the length of the video (50 min video takes 100 mins or more to rip). Is that normal?

3. During a normal, correctly functioning rip, should the process only make one pass (as seen by the elapsed timer) and stop?

4. I was expecting the file type generated to be MP4. While I have no real idea what file type was created, the file extension (chosen by VLC) was .ps , for example, myfilename.ps. Is that normal? What relation is there between this .ps file and an .mp4 file?

Thanks for your help.
