Transcoding VMWare VMnc codec

Postby snorkelman » 13 Dec 2010 19:42

I'm using VLC 1.1.5 hoping to transcode screencasts captured using VMWare's proprietary VMnc codec.

Recordings made with this codec can be played using Windows Media Player or VLC once the VMWare codec is installed on the system.

My attempts to convert to MP4 results in a VLC crash. I use the following steps:

Media|Convert/Save
File Tab|Add - select my AVI file
Convert/Save|Convert
Destination File->Browse - select output.mp4
Display the Ouput ->check
On Profile: Encpsulation MP4/MOV
On Profile: Video Codec H-264, 1,000 kb/s 10.00 fps, Scale 1
On Profile: no Audio codec
Save button->click
Start button->click

I don't get any output, I get an immediate crash, with the following info:

I can go through these same steps using video with a well-known codec, such as WMV3, and the conversion works properly.

Presumably, even if what I am trying to do is not supported, it shouldn't cause a crash.

Any ideas on how to work through this?

Yes, the VMnc codec is installed on the machine where I am attempting the conversion.
