RealAudio/RealVideo streaming fails in VLC

I have VLC v1.1.5, and when I try any links at http://service.real.com/realplayer/test/
I get an error message like this:

Session failed:
The requested RTSP session could not be established.
Your input can't be opened:
VLC is unable to open the MRL 'rtsp://media.real.com/showcase/service/samples/realvideo10_512.rm'. Check the log for details.

If VLC's Firefox plug-in doesn't work with the above site, you can:
1) Use this Firefox extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/446/
2) VLC>Media>Open Network Stream>rtsp://media.real.com/showcase/service/samples/realvideo10_512.rm

I don't see any blocking events in my firewall log.
I get the same behavior with Windows XP and Windows 7, so I would appreciate it if others would post test results with other OS, other players and older versions of VLC.

Is there something new regarding compatibility with streaming Real media videos? I have to download and watch remote courses from my university, I tried VLC to grab them but the procedure failed:

You cannot stream .rm with VLC. You need to transcode
