Screen Recording Transcoded to H.264 Appears Jumpy

Postby allenrabin » 04 Nov 2010 20:14

Hi,

I am trying to do the recording of my screen and transcode it to H.264 using VLC. I am using screen:// MRL, and recording at the frame rate of 15 frames per second. For saving/transcoding, I am using MPEG4 encapsulation, and H.264 encoding, at 3072 kb/s bitrate, and 0.75 scale.

I have tried doing this both on Windows and on OS X, and in either case, I am encountering strange behavior in the final output. The recorded video looks like it jerks back and forth: so, for example, if I am recording the screen where I am typing "One two three four" in the text editor, it appears as "O" -> "On" -> "One" -> "On" -> "O" -> "On" -> "One" -> "One T"... and so on, as if I am typing and then backspacing a bit, then typing some more, etc. -- even though I am just continuously typing.

Is anyone aware of what's causing this problem? I've tried recording to a different format (DIV3, encapsulated in AVI), and that works fine, but for my needs, I require an H.264 output.

Thanks!
