Don't close window when video ends

Postby asgerf » 27 Oct 2010 00:23

Hello,

I am using VLC on a laptop connected to a TV. The controls on the computer screen and the video is displayed on a TV.

My problem: When the video being played ends, the video window closes, resulting in the TV displaying my desktop wallpaper. When I start a new video, the video window will then open on my computer screen, so I have to drag it to the TV screen and put it in fullscreen again.

This is for a game at a theme party, and I really want to avoid any "Windows stuff" showing up on the TV, since that easily breaks the atmosphere. And also, the contestants need to be able to see the last frame from the video for the game to work.

Ideally, I want VLC to pause when it reaches the end of a video, so the last frame from the video is frozen on the screen. Is this possible somehow?

If not, is it possible to achieve with a LUA script? I spend most of my time programming, so writing a LUA script is not completely out of the question, but I am of course unfamiliar with the API for interacting with VLC.

Edit: Actually VLC opens the video window on my computer screen regardless of whether a video was already playing on the TV. In this case the TV also switches to my desktop wallpaper. Also very annoying.

Just manually resize the window to the size you want to use.

Resize the window.
For instance with your mouse.
Which part of that don't you understand ?

But my problem is that the window closes when the video ends. I don't see how the size of my window has anything to do with it.

The window shouldn't totally vanish but it should change size from something like this:

To something like that:

Hence you should be able to resize it.
If the window completly vanish at the end of the playback then it might be a crash.

Ahh, I need to clarify what I'm doing.

I have disabled video embedding in the video preferences, so the video have its own window separate from the window containing the controls. I do this because the video should be displayed on the TV screen while the controls are on the computer screen. When the video ends, the window with the controls indeed stays open, but the window with the video (which is on the TV's part of my desktop) disappears entirely.

I thought that would be the "standard" way of separating the controls from the video, but maybe I'm doing it wrong?

Maybe Tools -> Preferences (Show seetings=All) -> Video then on the right panel scroll down to Window properties -> Video width and Video height is what you're looking for ?

Those preferences didn't help me, but thanks for your help anyway.

I found a workaround for now, by doing what the guy in post #7 of this thread did (viewtopic.php?f=14&t=81693), and then use the undocked playlist window and tray icon to control VLC.

I wanted to do the same thing also and I didn't find an option setting to do it either. However, I did find a workaround that works nicely. Go into prefs All -> Playlist -> check "Repeat current item". Now when the video ends it'll re-start playing the video again from the beginning, thus keeping the window open. Definitely not the ideal behavior, but it's certainly better than the program automatically closing the video window at the end.

p.s.

Also what's weird is the "play and stop" option and the "play and pause on the last frame of the video" option both don't seem to work at all. In fact they actually override the other options and make the video window automatically close, which is the OPPOSITE of what they're supposed to do.
