What CPU would be better for watching MKV?

What CPU would be better for watching MKV?

Postby Furio » 26 Sep 2010 01:37

I am sorry if this is not the right place to post this but I could not find anywhere else on the Vlan forums.

I am looking to buy a dell studio 15 to use while away from home to watch 1080p MKV files. Assuming cost is no object, what is the better CPU to play MKVs while on the road? i5 540m (2.35Ghz) or i7 720QM (1.6Ghz). Which of these CPU's would work best or would they work the same for 1080p MKV watching?

On a side note/confirmation, does VLC player benefit from multi cores/hyper threading?

Thanks and sorry for such idiot questions.

The faster the better.

Thanks for the reply.

So you are saying the clock speed is the only factor at the moment. so the i5 with a larger clock speed would be better than the i7 in your opinion? If I have an i7 with lower speed, will it be unlikely to be able to play 1080p movies or should it have no issue watching them smoothly?

Also when you say soon what does soon mean? 1 month? 6 months? 1 year? Sorry to ask this question I am sure it is asked all the time.

thanks again for your reply

6 months at most.
else, with a decent GPU, VLC can decode with GPU.
