Streaming Vlc questions

Hi everyone, new to the forums. VLC looks like to be a excellent piece of software. I am a little confused on what it can do. What i am looking to do is to be able to stream music,and videos from my home computer to my pc and iphone in and out of my home network. I would also like the abiltiy to log into my server and pull any video and play it. It seems like to me is that with VLC you have to start the stream from the home server and then log into it from somewhere else??? My ultimate goal is to be able to stream multiple files without having to start it from my home? If VLC doesnt have the capabilities, then could someone recommend something.
